Cat Insurance and Paw Care
Pet insurance helps you pay for veterinary care your cat needs in case of illness, injury or an accident. Paws are a sensitive part of a cat’s body, and as a pet owner you should protect and care for your cat’s paws. If your cat’s paws do become injured, your pet insurance policy may be able to help with treatment costs.
Your vet will be able to treat paw problems as well as diagnose any paw discomfort your cat might have. Good pet insurance companies often pay your vet directly, so that you do not have to worry about paying for treatment or medication your cat might need for their paws. Pet insurance can take some of the stress out of the situation, so that you focus on treating your cat’s paws.
Cat’s paws are made up of five small pads on the digital; a plantar, which is the main, central pad; and the wrist-pad or pisiform which has a small claw. Whilst the skin on the pads is quite tough, and gets tougher as the cat gets older, the paws are still full of nerve endings which make them highly sensitive. As cats leap from great heights and use precise climbing skills, it’s important that their paws are in good order.
What damage can a cat do to their paws?
Cat’s paws can become cracked or damaged over time, or your cat might suffer an accident which damages their paws. A cat can easily cut their paws on glass or a sharp stone whilst out exploring their neighbourhood, for example. Cat’s paws are generally very hardy and designed specifically for walking on uneven surfaces outside, but a misplaced shard of glass or very jagged stone can easily slip between the cat’s pads on their paw and cause a very nasty cut. Equally, your cat could get an infection which affects his or her paws.
How to look after cat’s paws
There are a few things you can do to care for your cat’s paws.
- Clean: keep your cat’s paws clean and free from dirt.
- Moisturise: moisturizing cat paws using a product recommended by your vet
- Nail care: keep your cat’s nails short and in good condition. You should trim the nail just at the white tip before the curve to avoid discomfort for your cat.
- Check up: check your cat’s paws regularly. If you see any pus or discolouring in your cat’s paws, then take your cat to the vet for a check up.
By taking these simple precautions and care measures, you can keep your cat’s paws in good condition. If you do have any concerns about your cat’s paws, then take him or her to a vet where they can receive necessary treatment covered by pet insurance.
